Ice Station Weddell Photo Gallery

Images from 1992 Russian-American Scientific
Station on Drifting Sea Ice Off Antarctica

Posted by Polar Science Center--Applied Physics Laboratory--University of Washington

This site is a gallery of photographic images of scientific work and ice station life at Ice Station Weddell on the sea ice off Antarctica in 1992. It is offered principally as a resource for K-12 teachers and students in the hope that a hint of the visual experience will encourage student interest in the natural sciences in general, and polar sciences in particular. Permission is specifically granted for any teacher's non-commercial use of these images to further the education of their students.

Particular scientific work shown in the photographs was supported by NSF grants DPP91-10423 and DPP91-10422. The Russian effort was carried out by the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia.

The Polar Science Center (PSC) is a unit of the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), itself part of the College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, USA. PSC is involved in numerous studies of sea ice, polar oceanography, satellite imagery, and meteorology with primary funding from NSF, ONR, NASA, and NOAA.
