Definition of SeasonsWe created a summer and winter climatology with a high quality Arctic Ocean by merging Levitus 1998 analyzed fields with AOA analyzed fields. For a detailed explaination of how this was done, read section 2 of the PHC paper: 2. Data Preparation.
Field Depths
For each season, there is a temperature and a salinity field for each of
33 depths.
These depths (in meters) are:
0 400 1750
10 500 2000
20 600 2500
30 700 3000
50 800 3500
75 900 4000
100 1000 4500
125 1100 5000
150 1200 5500
200 1300
250 1400
300 1500
Specifics
1. Horizontal Slices
These are four-panel plots illustrating how each PHC field was created using as inputs the Levitus '98 and AOA fields. These panels show:2. Histogramsa) The analyzed Levitus FieldFigure 2 from the paper is an example of these types of plots.
b) The decimated Levitus Field
c) The AOA analyzed field
d) Our optimally interpolated field = b) + d)
These plots illustrate the difference between our PHC product and Levitus' 1998 fields, as shown in Figure 5 of the paper.3. Cross Sections
These are graphs of temperature or salinity vs. latitude at three fixed longitudes. Their purpose is to illustrate the continuity across the data boundaries. These boundaries are described in detail in Figure 3 of the paper.
