Measuring the Upper layer Temperature of the Polar Oceans

LOG OF DATA CHANGES

• December 2023: Level 2 data processing has been modified and updated. The data from the following buoys have been converted from Level 1 with this processing:

2022-01, 2022-03, 2022-04, 2022-05, 2022-06, 2022-10, 2022-11
2023-01, 2023-02, 2023-03, 2023-04, 2023-09, 2023-10, 2023-11, 2023-12

The following buoys, which measured salinity, have been reprocessed to include data columns for FWC, SSS, and depth of SSS:

2021-01, 2021-04, 2021-05

Major changes are:
1. Three new added quantities: First wet conductivity sensor (FWC), sea surface salinity (SSS) and depth of SSS.
2. When temperature data are removed due to excessive spiking, salinity data from an associated conductivity sensor to the thermistor, are also removed.
3. When valid temperature or salinity data are present, but there is no pressure measurement during that time, depths are set to nominal values.
The QC document describing the current data version has been updated.

• April 2023: Level 2 data processing has been modified and updated. The data from the following buoys have been converted from Level 1 with this processing:

2014-11
2014-13
2016-04
2016-07
2017-04
All buoys from year 2019 onwards.

Major changes are:
1. Two new added quantities: SST and depth of SST.
2. Modification of the method to find the First Wet Thermistor (FWT) which provides SST and depth of SST. Briefly, this modification involves allowing the data from the top thermistor (in the hull) to be reported as SST even though the Water/Ice indicator says 'Ice'. This is generally the case in late summer, when temperatures from this sensor report a consistent value at the ocean freezing temperature and we are assuming the buoy is likely in a lead.
3. Buoy data were eliminated when the GPS quality flag dropped below a value of 3, where
GPS quality flags 0 and 1 indicate that no GPS fix was acquired.
GPS quality flag 2 is a 2D fix.
GPS quality flag 3 is a 3D fix.
4. The method for handling ocean pressure data has been modified.
5. The terms 'First Tpod in Water' and 'First Wet Thermistor' have in the past been used interchangably. Now 'First Wet Thermistor' is used exclusively.
6. Webpage time series with Level 2 data processed on or after April 2023 show Level 2 data. Webpages for buoys processed before this time show Level 1 data.
The QC document describing the current data version has been updated.

• August 24th, 2016: Level 2 data has been updated with more filtering applied.
The Level 2 data modified at this time includes filtered ocean pressure data.
The link to that processing file can be found here.

• July 26th, 2016: 2010, 2011, and 2012 UpTempO buoys were renumbered.
We renumbered these buoys to be sequential according to the order of deployment. This is consistent with how we have been numbering the buoys since 2013. The table below shows the originally assigned numbers, and then the new numbers. Sorry for any inconvience this may cause!

• July 26th, 2016: Replaced Level 2 data files with a new version with more filtering applied.
The first version of Level 2 data was not extensively filtered. The only data converted to the -999 bad data flag were so called "capped values". The temperature fields in the newly uploaded files have been filtered for spikes, unphysical values, and other situations to be decribed in the Level 2 QC document.

• Jan 2016: Level 2 processed data and an ftp download option added
