Measuring the Upper layer Temperature of the Polar Oceans

UpTempO 2011 - 3 HEALY

Preparing to deploy the buoy. Thermistor string is uncoiled from its spindle, with thermistors (yellow pods) visible at irregular intervals. The atmospheric pressure sensor sticks up from the buoy (white) and the foam float collar (red) surrounds the hull. Watery areas on the ice floe are “melt ponds” of melted snow/ice, not ocean water.

The buoy deployed in its hole.
