Bering Strait Details

There are eight questionable Bering Strait profiles in the PHC 3.0 winter fields. These profiles (both temperature and salinity) are plotted on the right.

The Problem

In both the temperature and salinity profiles, values at depth are too high. We expect well mixed water in this area, with temperatures near freezing (~ -1.8 C), and salinity between 32 and 33 psu. The 30m depth salinity values pass this criteria, but the 50m depth salinities are too salty. Also, temperature values are too warm at 30m and 50m.

We suspect that the problem results from a lack of data at these depths in this region. We are tentatively planning a PHC update in early 2007.
