  • These files are structured and named to be analogous with the format of the World Ocean Atlas (Levitus) "analyzed" fields. The data are in ASCII format. Data points begin at -89.5 S and are arranged on a matrix which runs first over longitude, from .5 E to 359.5 E degrees, then over latitude, ending with 89.5 N (The data "spirals" up the world). This repeats for every depth. There are 10 entries per line, and there are 8 significant figures, 4 after the decimal point (10f8.4). The land value is -99. All of the depths for each field are included in each file. Each level has 64800 data values (that's one for every latitude and longitude coordinate: 360 X 180). Since there's 10 values per line, every 6480 lines of data in the files below constitute one level. For example, the first 6480 lines of data in the "Winter Temperature" file are the surface field. The next 6480 lines are the depth=10 meters field, and so on. Latitude and longitude files structured like these data files are included toward the bottom of this page under "Product Aides".

    File Naming Convention
The name of each downloaded file contains 3 pieces of information:
    [temperature or salinity][time period].[PHC version].obj
    'Temp'Temperature
    'Salt'Salinity
    '00'annual
    '01'-'12'
    jan to dec
    '13'winter
    '15' summer
    'p3' PHC 3.0

    EXAMPLES:
    Winter Temperature = Temp13_p3.obj
    December Salinity = Salt12_p3.obj
    Additional Information
    FILE SIZES

    • Seasonal and Annual fields are each 3.3MB gzipped files, and are 16.5MB when unzipped.
    • The individual monthly fields are each 2.7MB gzipped, and 12MB when unzipped.
    • The monthly .tar files are 32.8MB each, and contain 12 zipped files for a total of 144MB when unpacked and unzipped.
    • The .tar file containing all the data is 79.3MB. When unpacked and unzipped the data occupies 390MB.

    HOW TO UN-TAR FILES
    • UNIX users can un-tar files using the "tar xvf data.tar" command, and then unzip them with "gunzip data.gz"

    • MAC users can un-tar files using "Tar", a mac program for handling UNIX tar files, available online (free)

    • Windows users can un-tar files with "winZip", also available online (free?)

For those unfamiliar with the NODC format, here is an example FORTRAN program that reads Levitus Analyzed fields (the same format as our PHC product)
    get_anlz.f
Here's an IDL program that does the same, but is customized for PHC 3.0. It's quite friendly.
    ReadPHC.pro
A wonderful PHC user contributed this matlab program for reading PHC data.

    ReadPHCdata.m
For those who want land-filled data files that are still formatted the same, here is a FORTRAN program that fills the in -99 land values using a poisson solver. The function (fill_land.f) is taken directly from the 2MOM2.f program.
This program was slightly modified 3/1/04 to make it more PHC 3.0 compatible. Better instructions for making this program work were also added to the beginning comments of the program.
    fill_land.f
Here are the suface latitude and longitude coordinates structured exactly the same as the data files. There are 6480 lines in each file, cooresponding to the first 6480 lines in each data file above (the global surface). This information repeats for each depth. (i.e. the second 6480 lines of data is depth = 10m, with the same latitude and longitude coordinates). Latitudes.dat
    Longitudes.dat
