Andreas Heiberg provides logistics support for arctic and antarctic research programs sponsored primarily by the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation. He coordinates the acquisition and scheduling of ships and planes and the construction and maintenance of research ice stations and base camps. One of Mr. Heiberg's largest logistics support was conducted for SHEBA (Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean), a 1-year field project to address the interaction of the surface energy balance, atmospheric radiation, and clouds over the Arctic Ocean. More recently he returned from managing the third year of logistics support for the North Pole Environmental Observatory. The project's first camp was established at the North Pole in April 2000 to learn how the world's northernmost sea helps regulate global change.
In 1992, Mr. Heiberg received a Meritorious Public Service Award from the Office of the Chief of Naval Research in honor of his 20 years of service in support of arctic research. In 1999 he received the National Science Foundation Arctic Service Award for his contributions to SHEBA. Mr. Heiberg joined the Polar Science Center in 1971. |
