Christopher Krembs

Dr. Christopher Krembs is a biological oceanographer with a background in sea ice ecology. His current research focuses on life at cold temperatures and high salinities. His interests include microbial mechanisms which alter the micro- environment of sea ice. Due to the interplay of organic molecules, salts and energy and mass fluxes in the polar sea ice cover, his interdisciplinary research is at the junction between sea-ice ecology, cryobiology, organic chemistry and sea ice physics. His current research focus is on microbial interactions and mechanisms in the brine channel system of sea ice that alter the geometrical constrains that govern life. These mechanisms are far reaching and affect the macroscopic scale of sea ice. He demonstrated that the cumulative effect of microbial habitat alterations affect physical sea ice characteristics. A strong interest in method and instrumental development has allowed him to pursue innovative new directions and concepts in sea ice research through numerous field trips and hypothesis-driven experimental evidence.
