Retrieving
the first year's data from the North Pole Environmental
Observatory moored to the ocean floor. A new mooring
line with instruments were deployed to record 2002's
ocean current, temperature, salinity, ice drift
and thickness.
Sponsors
NASA, NOAA, NSF, and ONR provide most of PSC's funding. Of particular interest to them is our research into the relationship between polar regions and the global climate system. To that end, our research focuses on observing and modeling the physical processes that control the nature and distribution of sea ice, the structure and circulation in high latitude oceans, and the interactions among air, ocean, and ice.

Graduate
Education Involvement
Graduate student
research is a vital part of the Polar Science Center, Applied
Physics Laboratory. Several of our scientists hold joint
faculty appointments in academic departments and teach and
supervise graduate students. However, the Applied Physics
Laboratory is a research unit and does not admit students
or grant degrees. If you are interested in working under
the supervision of a PSC staff member, you must first apply
for admission to the appropriate academic department, for
example, Electrical Engineering, Atmospheric Sciences or
Oceanography. Once you are admitted as a graduate student,
you can then explore opportunities for research at PSC.
Of course, if there is someone with whom you specifically
want to work, you may wish to contact that person directly
early in the admissions process to determine if graduate
research opportunities are available.
