SCICEX, Scientific Ice Expeditions, is a program of Arctic marine science conducted on U.S. Navy submarines. The SCICEX 2000 Workshop was held in October of 1998 to discuss science accomplishments during five cruises, and to consider what might supersede SCICEX.

WORKSHOP SPONSORSHIP Top of Page

Support for this meeting was graciously provided by the High Latitude Program of the Office of Naval Research, the Arctic Natural Sciences Program of the National Science Foundation, and the Arctic Research Commission.

PURPOSE Top of Page

The purpose of the Workshop is to provide the framework for coordinating an Arctic scientific program for the next decade that takes advantage of the unique capabilities of U.S. Navy submarines. Specifically, the Workshop will:

The area presently open to data release is the interior of "The Box" which excludes all national economic zones.

BACKGROUND Top of Page

In 1993 scientists were invited by the U.S. Navy to participate in a submarine cruise in the Arctic Ocean to see how a submarine would serve as a useful platform for scientific observation. This effort was successful and was expanded into SCICEX (Scientific Ice Expeditions), a program of six Arctic cruises in the spring of 1995, the autumn of 1996 and of 1997, the summer of 1998, and the spring of 1999. As a result of these cruises, notable successes are being attained in the areas of ocean structure and circulation, ocean chemistry, marine biology, marine geology and geophysics, and sea ice. An extensive bibliography of preliminary results from conferences abstracts and of some early reviewed publications is available on the SCICEX web site (http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/SCICEX/).

The Workshop was held at the Airlie Center.

ORGANIZING COMMITTEE Top of Page

The Organizing Committee consisted of the convenors and two individuals who jointly head each of the five topical working groups. One of each pair was a past or present SCICEX investigator; the other was from outside the program, to provide a balanced set of ideas for the future program. The tasks of the Organizing Committee were:
